Treating Acutes During Chronic Care

Acute illnesses commonly happen during chronic or constitutional care. This can be challenging for homeopaths since the healing response to the original chronic or constitutional remedy can often be disturbed. What do we do then when new symptoms appear?

The approach to acute illness during chronic care is primarily determined by the kind of chronic care that has been given. It is one thing to treat acutes when there has been a healing response to a single high potency remedy. But quite another when the daily dosing of a remedy is now being effected by a new acute illness. Let's go through some of the possibilities and discuss the best approaches.

When a constitutional remedy is working and a new, acute illness happens,  the same remedy that has brought the person to the new acute will be indicated and also help through the acute. Often that new acute expression is a part of the greater healing process. I find if the acute is not severe and the suffering is bearable, the best...

Favorite Medicines

It is easy to become complacent and prescribe favorite medicines when being a homeopath. If we are lulled into a stupor seeing many cases they may all seem to have similar themes and therefore similar remedies. Be very careful when prescribing to treat the person and not the disease. As well we should be very careful in selecting remedies that fit the case rather than remedies for similar cases we have seen before.

In Aphorism 257 of the Organon Hahnemann made it clear we should take great care not to develop favorite medicines; " The true physician will take care to avoid making favorite remedies of medicines, the employment of which he has, by chance, perhaps found often useful, and which he has had opportunities of using with good effect. If he do so, some remedies of rarer use, which would have been more suitable, consequently more serviceable, will often be neglected."

We must select very good rubrics for the case and understand what is really asking to be healed. In addition...

Biochemistry is a foundational understanding of using body constituents to help the body heal. It's roots date back to 1832 where a statement was written in Stapf's Archiv  "All the essential component parts of the human body are great remedies."  Another article in the same journal from 1846 reads, "All the essential component parts of the human body act on such organs principally where they have function."

It was in 1873 that Dr. Schuessler published his first article about the biochemic form of medicine. He identified a basic understanding about this medical view. It is based on three main principles.

  • The human body contains twelve vital inorganic elements which are responsible for maintenance of normal cell function.
  • When from some cause, one or more of these elements become deficient the normal cell function or metabolism is disturbed and a condition arises known as disease.
  • By supplying to the system the lacking elements in the form of...

Most tropical and subtropical areas in the world have mosquitoes that can carry the single-celled Plasmodium parasite that causes Malaria. It is one of the most common and deadly diseases for mankind. There are between 300 and 500 million people infected with this disease and 1-2 million deaths annually as a result of Malaria.

The cycle of Malarial infection begins when a female mosquito bites a person with Malaria. The mosquito ingests the blood that contains the Malarial parasite. Once inside the mosquito the parasite reproduces and multiplies. When the mosquito bites another person the parasite is injected into the body. Once inside the parasite migrates to the liver where it multiplies again. Typically the parasite reaches maturity in 1 to 3 weeks where it migrates to the red blood cells, eventually causing the red blood cells to rupture.

Once the cells rupture the parasites are released and suddenly the person develops chiil and fever. The reproduction cycle and rupture are...

No Remedy? Now What?

There are so many remedies in our Materia Medica it is really impossible to have every remedy you need, in the potency you need, available for instant administration?  What do you do when you know the remedy you want to give but don't have it?

I have found that dealing with a reputable pharmacy that stocks many remedies in a variety of potencies is an absolute must being a professional homeopath. I use Hahnemann Labs for most purchases of remedies and can have them delivered in as little as 2 days by standard mail. But in any situation where I need the remedy in a shorter amount of time, I'm stuck.

As you all well know, two days can be an eternity when it comes to changing health conditions. There are other ways to "make" the remedy that fall a little bit out of the norm for "standard remedy preparation". But if these methods work then the possibility for help are worth...

It's All About Love

Yesterday was Valentine's Day. This day is celebrated on February 14 of each year in commemoration of Saint Valentine. It is traditionally a day that love and affection is celebrated between intimate companions. As with all of the emotions tied up in lovers there is an equal possibility for pain and suffering to happen when love becomes disappointed.

There was a dark comedy movie released a few years ago called Valentines Day. The movie tracked several people and couples showing their triumphs and failures in love. In the end love prevailed, but the suffering of all of the individuals made for good drama. It was quite representative of the trials and tribulations most people go through to finally find love in their life.

There is probably not one person on this planet who has not experienced disappointment in love. Real love is an action and not a feeling; the ego mind so wants to believe all of the emotional feelings of the heart, that when disappointment comes, it is very...

Fear is a big section of our Repertory. Why do you suppose that is? I think it is because our human nature tends to show our separation from G-d through this primary emotion. If we were to be in the graces of love and without ever being in fear, then we might say that there is no spiritual basis for the expression of dis-ease or suffering. But we do experience fear and no one escapes this. It is the quickest way to leave our truth and believe in the untruth or falsness of our expereince.

I have an acronym that reminds me of the truth about fear. It is F=False, E=Evidence, A=Appearing, R=Real. False Evidence Appearing Real. This really does explain fear. Fear in the Websters Dictionary is; an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by expectation or awareness of danger. Anxious concern. dread, fright, alarm, panic, terror, trepidation.

Homeopathy often uses fears as a way to help define the energy of a person and understand what is asking to be healed. It is the most common of...

A New Paradigm

There is much discussion about the future of Homeopathy these days. The question of how do we integrate into the present model of medicine and gain respect seems to be on many organizations minds. As we further this discussion we need to chart a new course for homeopathy. We need a new paradigm.

The established allopathic model of drugs and surgery to treat illness is not a model that is really conducive to a new paradigm for Homeopathy. We need to reevaluate what the model for health and disease really is and create a new discourse.

Trying to integrate into a model of the treatment of disease and not the maintenance of health is really the problem of homeopathy. We need to establish a new paradigm of describing health. From the deviation of health comes dis-ease. If a new way of looking at the model were to change, homeopathy would become incredibly popular and powerful.

I think this is changing naturally as more and more people become dissatisfied with the medical treatment they...

The Repertory

Our best tool for homeopathy is the Repertory. It is a tool that no homeopath could really do without. This is a system of classification of symptoms that are indexed and organized in sub-categories. All areas of the body, the mind and generalities and sensations including vertigo, cough, expectoration, perspiration etc. are organized by chapter to identify the rubric and the remedies that have been proved to be useful for that symptom.

The pioneers in homeopathy created this system for their use and also passed these repertories on. Some of the famous repertories that are still very valuable and useful have been written by Kent, Boger, Bönninghausen, Boericke, Jahr. Today we have modern compilations of these repertories and newer additions by many modern authors. The Synthetic Repertory, The Complete Repertory, Murphy’s Medical Repertory and Synthesis, to name a few.

The organization of any repertory is really a working tool of the authors mind and...

The Person Not the Disease

Several newsletters ago I had a request for clarification about the comment that "the remedy is for the person and not their disease." I want to explain further now.

Homeopathy is individualized medicine. A constellation or picture of disease is painted by the symptoms a person has. They are NOT their disease. They are a living expression of energy, made in the image of G-d, and a part of all creation.

Dis-ease or "disease" is an energy that clings to this person. It could only be known by the animating vital force. Otherwise if there were no animating vital force then we would say that the person were dead. As the vital force rules with unbounded sway, it makes no mistakes and has the principle of survival built into it. It wants to reflect this ever expanding continuum of life force expression that it is a part of. This is why Hering's Law of Cure (from the inside out) makes real sense, not just because it is observed so frequently.

The only way disease could ever be expressed is...
