Who is Your Best Advocate?

Homeopathy plays a small role in the health industry. Unfortunately between the pharmaceutical companies and the insurance companies, the medical business is just that; a VERY BIG business. Because of this, the practice of medicine has changed greatly in the last few decades. It used to be that if you saw a doctor, there was a true office visit. This means that you had a conversation with the doctor and he/she spent more than 5-15 minutes with you.

As a result of these brief office visits, the exchange of information is very limited. If you are not your own best health advocate, you are liable to be another casualty of the medical system rather than reaping the benefits of good medical care. This where homeopathy differs so greatly from the standard medical model. The homeopath wants to hear how you are doing. They want to hear the details of your suffering. They want to hear your history and the things that bother you. This is why the first consultation will last a minimum of two...

Why We Get Sick

In order to help someone heal from illness, it is good to understand why we get sick in the first place. There are many theories about illness including those of Loius Pasteur and his germ theory, which still is very popular today. We only need to look at the mass hysteria around the swine flu and the idea that a germ, bacteria, or virus will come and get us, to see his theory is very much alive. If this theory were true then everyone exposed to this virus would become ill. As we all know, this is not the case and has much more to do with susceptibility than infection. I can safely say that most everyone reading this newsletter has been exposed to many germs and a plethora of other viruses that can make us sick, but few get stricken with illness. If the germ theory were true, then we would all be sick much more often.

So if it is not the germ or bacteria or virus, what is it that makes us sick? In the end, it is ourselves. Let me explain. There is a perfect order in our being that...

Increasing the Potency of Remedies

Sometimes when we are changing potencies, the next potency that we want to give may not be available. Often the next available potency is a big jump in potency, for example, a 30C to a 200C, or a 200C to 1M. Many times, an intermediate potency will have to be custom manufactured by the homeopathic pharmacy. Usually, this involves additional fees that some feel is too much to pay. There is a simple way to increase the potency of an already existing remedy. Following these instructions exactly will produce a new potency of the same remedy. There are a few very important steps to remember so following the instructions precisely is critical.

The first thing to be mindful of is cleanliness and to use boiling water for sterilization. You will need a few items on hand to be successful. The first is a clean, brown glass dropper bottle. Usually, one or two ounces will be sufficient in size. This should be new, clean, and never used before. As you are doing the preparation of the potency,...

Asking Questions

Sometimes when we receive a case it comes to us on a silver platter. This happens when the person delivers their story and it is so rich and full of descriptors that it makes our jobs very easy in understanding what is asking to be healed, selecting rubrics, and coming to the remedy. But it is not always so easy. Sometimes the person is not accustomed to sharing their life and will report just names of their physical diseases. This does not offer much to the homeopath in the way of understanding the subtle nuances that are necessary for correct homeopathic prescribing.

Many times the person will be able to describe their disease in allopathic terms and know much more about it than you; the homeopath. It is helpful to let them speak and not stop their flow even if it seems that the information you are receiving may not be that useful in prescribing. When this occurs, I listen closely to how they are delivering their story and for any ways that they refer to their experience of...

Homeopathy for Kidney Stones

Kidney stones occur in about one in 1000 people. The passing of kidney stones can cause excruciating pain. Homeopathy can be very useful in helping to heal the susceptibility to kidney stones and during the acute pain of passing them.

Kidney stones are called renal calculi. They are crystallized mineral deposits that develop in the renal pelvis or calyces. Calculi develop when calcium and other minerals, such as uric acid, crystallize in the kidney. These can break off and enter the ureters causing pain (renal colic) during the spasmodic contraction of the ureter. Sometimes complete blockage of the ureter happens. This is a serious situation and needs prompt attention. If the stones are small enough, they can pass unnoticed.

Renal colic is characterized by excruciating, intermittent pain, usually in the area over the kidney in the small of the back and spreading across the abdomen often to the genitals and inner thighs. Other symptoms can include nausea,...

Homeopathy for Childbirth

Childbirth is not a disease. It is a normal progression of actions of the body to deliver a baby into this world. Because it is a process, there is plenty that can go wrong and affect the health of the mother and child. Homeopathy can help the process along and help preserve the good health of the mother and child.

Labor is a series of rhythmic, progressive contractions of the uterus that gradually moves the fetus through the lower part of the uterus, through the vagina, and into the outside world. It is truly a manifestation of the miracle of creation. This process happens in three stages.

The first stage is labor proper. This most commonly starts with the rupture of the amniotic sac and the release of the amniotic fluid. It has two phases where the contractions push the fetus into the cervix. This is called dilation as the fetus begins to appear and the cervix is opening. This process usually lasts around 12 hours and is...

Is Homeopathic Medicine a Placebo?

I often see articles that refer to homeopathy as placebo. Or far worse, quackery. I know from years of experience that something does happen when the correct remedy is given. Because there are no direct effects and only what can be revealed by the dynamic expression of the vital force, it is a fair assumption that the effects of the remedy have been placebo. So I thought we should investigate this idea.

What does placebo really mean? According to Websters Dictionary, placebo is Latin for "I shall please." Our common thought about placebo is that because we take a pill, even though there is no physical signature of the substance, we have a healing response because we believe it. So the placebo is the pill saying "I shall please. I am at your service. Make use of what I have to offer." And the belief of the person is, "I believe this to be true. So it is."  And a response happens. We often will see this even in homeopathy when it is inappropriate to repeat the remedy and...

Homeopathic Emergency Travel Kit

Whenever I travel, I carry a homeopathic emergency travel kit with me. In it are 50 remedies that are the most helpful in any emergency or acute condition that could arise when I am away from home. I will not go over all of the remedies in the kit but I will share with you some ways to put your own kit together and why.

The thing about emergencies is that you never know when one will arise. So it is best to always be prepared, especially in this ever-changing world we live in. Having only a little homeopathic knowledge and some basic remedies can make a huge difference in self-care and the care of others. In most emergencies, the very first thing to do is ask for help. This means offering a silent prayer for help from divine sources as well as calling for help from ambulance, fire, or police.

In most emergencies, these physical helpers may be out of reach or too busy helping others. It is then our responsibility to help ourselves and others and do the best...

Physician, Heal Thyself

I often hear people refer to homeopaths as healers. Each time I hear this, I am a bit taken aback, especially when it comes from a fellow homeopath. It is my humble opinion that we each are responsible for our own healing and could not bring healing to another by our own volition. We may initiate a process with another individual either by prayer, good intention, education, or homeopathy but ultimately it is the derangement in the person's vital force that produces disease and it will be the very same vital force that establishes order and healing. We may inspire, but we do not do the healing.

The exception to this rule is when we heal ourselves. We are the only ones we can heal and it is our responsibility to our clients and ourselves to do this healing. As a fellow member of the human race, we are bound by the same natural laws as those we are trying to help. So we must do all we can to heal our lives and be free to use our reason-gifted mind so...

Allopathic Drugs and Homeopathy

One of the biggest challenges for modern homeopaths is the frequent use of drugs that are being used to treat all illnesses. For the homeopath, we see these as obstacles to cure. This is true. But how do we deal with drugs when our client comes to us seeking help and is taking other allopathic drugs from their doctor?

In an ideal world, all of our clients would be informed and willing to go through the steps of healing without drugs. But most clients are already indoctrinated and insured into the allopathic system. Yet most say they do not want to take drugs and want help. That's why they have come to the homeopath. So what is a homeopath to do? First, I personally never take anyone off of the drugs that they are on. This, I explain, is between themselves and their doctor who prescribed them. I do not want the responsibility of managing the drug withdrawal and never know for sure how much the drug is affecting the person. I want the client to become more responsible and communicate...
